MARQUETTE -- With a booming voice, singer Lorrie Hayes was easily able to make the leap from gospel to blues.

'It was no big jump for me to jump from expressing myself about a belief that I have when I'm singing in church to expressing myself about a belief that I have about life...in the blues,' said Hayes.

This strong belief has enabled her group, the Flat Broke Blues Band, to become a crowd favorite on the Marquette music scene for the last ten years, playing major cities in the Midwest and even performing for the Seattle Seahawks at the 2006 Super Bowl.

'I think it's a soul-to-soul thing,' Hayes said, who also plays the harmonica. 'When they see you being sincere, clear, and passionate about what you're doing, you can get that message through to them.'

That connection can't be reached, however, unless you play genuinely good music. She and her four bandmates create original tunes that infuse the blues with rock, soul, and R&B...the latest of which can be found on their new CD, Worth the Weight.

'Blues music is not just one kind of music,' said guitarist and founding member, Walt Lindala. 'It's a feeling. The music is all about feeling. It's about feeling really good or feeling really low, but that's what it's about.'

If you're looking for your next blues fix, you can groove to the Flat Broke Blues Band Thursday night at the Marquette Seafood Fest at 8 p.m. and Friday night at the Lower Harbor Blues Cruise at 9:30 p.m. If you can't make it this weekend, you can still check them out at the Marquette Area Blues Fest next Sunday, August 31, at 2:30 p.m.
