Marquette's Flat Broke Blues Band had the opportunity to take part in hockey history recently. The band served as the pre-game tailgate warm-up entertainment at the Marquette Rangers' "Paint the Rink Pink" breast cancer research fundraising game. The game, held on October 17th at Marquette's Lakeview Arena raised thousands of dollars for the Marquette General Health System's Cancer Center. The money raised will be used by the Center for the research and treatment of breast cancer and other cancers treated at the facility.
The crowd set a single-game attendance record in the North Division of the North American Hockey League with 2471 people in paid attendance.
Flat Broke singer Lorrie Hayes, a five-year survivor of breast cancer herself, was also featured as the singer of the National Anthem for the game. Hayes' stirring rendition of the American classic sent the record crowd into a hockey playing frenzy.
The Marquette Rangers won the game over the Alpena IceDiggers by a final of 2 to 1.
